IntelliSearch enables online access to Cultural Heritage

P R E S S  R E L E A S E

Oslo, October 15, 2007. The Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority (ABM-utvikling) has entered into a contract with IntelliSearch with the objective of enabling ”Cultural Heritage for All”. ABM-utvikling intends to give all citizens access to their common heritage from a search-driven portal. The portal will allow access to all digital archives, libraries, museum catalogues and collections associated with the ABM-institutions. IntelliSearch SITE will be the core search platform in this new portal.

The contract entails piloting of IntelliSearch SITE in a central information access portal - enabling online access to all the content residing in the collections of Norwegian museums, archives and libraries. This represents the start of a project expected to take several years of digitization. The portal will be one of the largest content aggregators in Norway, indexing more than 4000 websites as well as providing federated search to third party search engines. The pilot’s objective is to identify and address functional and technical issues connected with implementing a cross-sectional search platform – leading to an operational production portal.

”Search technology is central in enabling online access to the cultural heritage represented by the collections of our institution. We chose IntelliSearch as vendor after a thorough vendor evaluation. The deciding factors were technology, flexibility, functionality and references", said ABM-utvikling’s project manager Bernt Olle Lund.

The agreement

IntelliSearch is the sole contractor in this pilot with an expected delivery by year-end. The agreement entails licenses, support, implementation and testing.

"This project is a good example of the impact of search technology in the public sector generally, and within cultural information services specifically. Search technology is central to enabling easy public access to information whilst reducing the need for manual information distribution in the public sector. ABM-utvikling is in many ways a pioneer within digital information handling and represents an important reference to IntelliSearch", said CEO Harald Jellum, IntelliSearch.
